DVD/VCR Combis – Introduction

The DVD/VCR combi is another combination variation that’s proving popular on the market today. This versatile matching of TV, VCR and DVD technology can be used as an all-in-one entertainment centre, especially for areas where space is an issue, such as kitchens and bedrooms.

There are many models of DVD/VCR combi available, with different specifications and features. This means that whatever your needs, there is a model of DVD/VCR combi on the market to suit you.

What is a DVD/VCR Combi?

A DVD/VCR combi is an integrated unit consisting of a DVD, TV and video recorder. This type of combination unit can come in a variety of formats, including widescreen, flat tube and LCD flat-screen, with screen widths up to 30” or more. Some newer models are even HDTV ready, with only an external receiver required to display High Definition pictures.

Advantages of the DVD/VCR Combi

The DVD/VCR combi has several advantages that make it worth considering:

  • Variety of formats available: Models are available with flat screens, flat tube screens and widescreen sizes.
  • Versatility: You can watch a DVD while videoing your favourite TV programme.
  • HDTV ready: With an HD-ready model, all you need is an HDTV receiver in order to enjoy the superb quality offered by high definition broadcasts.
  • Convenience: If you are short on space, a DVD/VCR combi will give you great functionality without the need for different boxes and cables.

Disadvantages of the DVD/VCR Combi

The DVD/VCR combi does, however, have some disadvantages when compared to other types of DVD player:

  • Basic equipment: The DVD player and VCR are likely to be basic in specification due to costs and space restrictions. This means that features such as Progressive Scan will only be available on the most expensive models. The video recorder is also likely to only have the basic recording and playback facilities.
  • Unsuitable for use with home cinema systems: Depending on the size of the screen, a combi unit such as this may not be suitable for use with your home cinema system, especially if it is situated in a smaller room.
